Minister announces positive planning policy at REA conference
Submitted: 8 June 2006
Yvette Cooper, Housing and Planning Minister announced at the REA Micro-Renewables Conference that all local authorities are urged to include on-site renewable energy measures in their local development plans to help tackle climate change. REA has been pushing for Planning Policy Statement 22 to require local authorities to use planning to positively encourage renewables deployment for some time, and the announcement was very well received.

The link to the press release, along with a link to a more detailed breakdown of plans that were examined for this review of PPS22 policies is given below, along with the slides from the event.

Interestingly, George Osborne the Shadow Chancellor, announced that the Quality of Life Policy Group has been asked to look into the success of feed-in tariff policies, and consider whether this mechanism might be applicable in the UK. This was George Osborne's first major speech on the Environment.
