John Griffiths - brief biographical details

John W Griffiths BSc CEng, FIChemE, FCIMgt

John, 59, is a chemical engineer and general manager with broad experience in operation, started out in the UK gas industry in 1966 He has worked on design and construction and operation of offshore oil & gas facilities since 1979. He has worked for British Gas and several engineering & construction contractors, mainly developing oil and gas facilities in UK waters. He currently is an independent consultant in the energy industry with a focus on the marine renewable energies.

Chair of “Energies from the Sea” Task Force (1997-9) for the DTI-sponsored Marine Foresight Panel. This Task Force report has been an influential document in development of wave and tidal industry.

Was Technical Advisor to Highlands & Islands Enterprise since 1999 on marine renewable energy, responsible for technical definition of the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), Orkney. Has been acting as interim Technical Director of EMEC for the past year and has supervised initial studies for the proposed tidal test facility on Orkney.

Co-ordinated preparation of the draft standard for Open Sea Testing of Wave Energy Conversion Systems, published as a working document in March 2004.

He has authored a number of papers/presentations on marine renewables as well as several articles in various industry publications.
