A potentially important new energy industry is poised for a big step forward this year, with the installation of trial tidal stream and wave energy devices off the UK coast. Developers of both technologies hope to install substantial generating capacity within a decade, provided the Government offers a financial bridge to full-scale commercialisation. But they will also need to convince investors that their technologies can withstand harsh offshore conditions and will not have unacceptable impacts on the marine environment.
