The Renewables Obligation was introduced in April this year. This novel policy has caused great interest, but can it achieve its objective of delivering 10% of our electricity supply from renewables by 2010? There is a long way to go and last year renewable energy as a percentage of electricity generation fell rather than increased. In the following feature, Gaynor Hartnell*, examines recent trends in planning activity for early signs of the policy’s performance. She also argues that the time has come to let renewable project developers opt out of their NFFO contracts if they wish – as suggested by the Environmental Audit Committee.
