The Renewables Obligation was introduced in April this year. This novel policy has caused great interest, but can it achieve its objective of delivering 10% of our electricity supply from renewables by 2010? There is a long way to go and last year renewable energy as a percentage of electricity generation fell rather than increased. In the following feature, Gaynor Hartnell*, examines recent trends in planning activity for early signs of the policy�s performance. She also argues that the time has come to let renewable project developers opt out of their NFFO contracts if they wish � as suggested by the Environmental Audit Committee.
