REA Wave & Tidal Conference 2006
Submitted:13July2006
The REA's fourth Wave & Tidal Technology Symposium (WATTS) was held on Thursday 13 July 2006 in Bristol. The event featured a wide range of interesting and stimulating presentations and debates, and was attended by over 130 delegates. WATTS was held in association with Regen SW, the renewable energy agency for the South West of England.
This conference addressed questions such as:

  • Are the existing incentives adequate?
  • How will the consenting process, marine special planning and grid issues impact on this developing sector?
  • How do financiers view prospects for the sector?
  • As with previous WATTs conferences, there was also an overview of some of the various devices being developed.

The Right Hon Peter Hain, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, gave the keynote address while Charles Hendry MP presented the Conservative vision for marine renewables. Other speakers included Richard Mellish, Carolyn Campbell and Richard Mellish of the DTI along with device developers, financiers, utilities, the Carbon Trust, Royal Haskoning, ABP Mer, Professor Stephen Salter, wave power pioneer and others.
