On track to meet our renewable targets – and if not, what needs to be done? |

An extract from the introduction of an article by Gaynor Hartnell in the forthcoming issue of Parliamentary Policy Review The RPA has just published its second yearbook , and the headline figures are disappointing. The overall rated renewable capacity of UK power plant increased by only 7% over the last financial year. A growth of around 25% each year in electricity output is needed if the Government’s target of 10% by 2010 is to be achieved. |
The Renewables Obligation (RO) requires licensed electricity suppliers to source an increasing percentage of their sales from renewables. This percentage is currently 4.9% and it increases year on year to reach 15.4% by 2015. |
At the moment there is only enough renewable generation to meet half of the requirement, and because of the way the Obligation is designed, this means that end consumers are paying twice as much for renewable electricity as they should be. |
