Industry calls on Government to act immediately on proposals to overhaul regulator�s remit

The Renewable Energy Association today wholeheartedly welcomed the SDC�s proposals to amend Ofgem�s remit.
These proposals would enable Ofgem to facilitate the breakthrough we need to deliver on the UK�s renewables targets. Its present duties can stymie progress towards a sustainable energy system.
�Ofgem�s remit is controlled by the Government. If this remit is in conflict with achieving environmental targets, clearly the Government must change it. It�s no good letting Ofgem take the flack for obstructing our progress towards a sustainable energy system,� said Philip Wolfe, the REA�s Chief Executive.

Wolfe continued; �How the Government reacts to this report will be a critical test of its commitment to climate change and UK renewables. Change is needed quickly, as we are looking forward to the publication of the first draft of the new EU Renewable Energy Directive before the turn of the year. This will herald much higher targets - challenging but achievable � but only if Government lets Ofgem make the right decision.

The reports proposals read like a wish for REA. Among the numerous measures are proposals which would:
  • enable the provision of renewable heat
  • ensure smaller generators are not disadvantaged in trading arrangements
  • make it easier for smaller participants to influence key industry codes
  • help clear the outrageous queue in Scotland, whereby thousands of wind turbines with planning permission are currently prevented from connecting to the grid
